What is Hyalgan?

Hyalgan is used to treat osteoarthritis of the knee in patients who do not respond adequately to conservative nonpharmacologic therapy or simple analgesics. Hyalgan contains hyaluronate, a substance naturally found in the synovial fluid that lubricates and cushions the knee joint. When injected into in the knee, it helps to relieve pain by supporting the joint and preventing wear and tear. Hyalgan injections can be used in addition to prescription pain relievers. The manufacturer of this product is Fidia.

How does this product work?

Osteoarthritis is characterized by pain and stiffness in the joints that worsens with age. These symptoms are attributed to a loss of synovial fluid in the joint. Hyalgan has similar rheological properties to synovial fluid. As such, its injection into arthritic joints provides lubrication and shock absorption. After treatment, patients should experience increased mobility and decreased pain.

How long do the results last?

Hyalgan alleviates the pain resulting from knee osteoarthritis for up to six months.

What is the expected recovery time for my patients?

There is no recovery time after a Hyalgan injection. Patients can immediately resume their normal routine after the treatment.

Important safety tips:

• Do not use Hyalgan to treat patients with known hypersensitivity to hyaluronate preparations.
• Exercise caution when injecting this product into patients that have avian protein, feathers, and egg allergies.
• Do not inject Hyalgan into areas with present infections or skin diseases.
